Examining the Impacts of the Gutka Bans in Selected Indian States

Gutka is a type of chewing tobacco (made with betel leaf, areca nut, and slaked lime) that is common in India. Surveys were conducted in seven states (Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya, Maharashtra, Orissa and Pradesh) and the National Capital Territory to understand the impacts of Indian state laws that ban the sale and distribution of gutka.

The research was led by Dr. Jeffrey Drope at the American Cancer Society, supported by an award from IGTC with funding from the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.
