Good surveillance and evaluation infrastructure is the cornerstone for understanding trends in tobacco use, industry strategies, and tobacco control policy and program effectiveness. Reliable, accurate and timely data and evaluation is the key to persuading policy makers that a program is producing results leading to improved health outcomes, or that new interventions and approaches are required to improve program effectiveness. This module provides a general overview of key tobacco control outcomes and their indicators. The learning objective of the module is to help program managers and researchers make informed choices on their surveillance and monitoring outcomes, and the selection of appropriate indicators for a program. The module will also present some commonly used national surveys and surveillance systems.
